Pretty Surprise

We went to visit Summer for Thanksgiving and were gone for about a week. Right before we left I ran around the house and watered all the plants. I noticed some pretty pink flower buds had appeared on this cactus. I was a little surprised and didn't know what to expect.

This is what I found when we got home.

Really big pretty tropical-looking flowers! Cool!

Holly, I was told this was a Christmas Cactus because it blooms around Christmas. Mine isn't doing anything. Started it off a piece that broke off a plant at the retreat house Pat's deacon training was held at. It would have been thrown out, someone's jacket broke off this little piece. I even water it now that you told me about that secret :) Your flowers are beautiful!

Yeah, that's right about it being a Christmas Cactus. It's actually the one I got from one of the East girls. (I don't remember which one, but she was growing a bunch of little plants for a school project.)

Yep I have a christmas cactus too, have always loved them. Anyway Lory, mine says that if you are having a hard time getting it to rebloom to set it in a dark place where it will be in darkness 13-14 hours of pitch dark a day. They need to go in a dorment state to let the blooms set. It needs to stay this way for about 7 weeks then bring to "normal" light again and it should bloom. Mine is still in the dark place, soon I will bring it out so we shall see.

Very pretty bloom, Holly. Dr. Peters has a huge Christmas Cactus in his office and it's full of blooms. Nice to see that flowering at this time of year. : )

I've heard of those before, but I always wondered how the cactus knew it was Christmas. Maybe if you sing Christmas carols to it you will get bigger blossoms.
